Sony In-Dash CD Player (CDX-M620)

April 26th, 2010 by pacapao

Sony In-Dash CD Player (CDX-M620) The guy at my local audio store (we’re friends) recommends these over JVC ELCHAMELEONS because the black panel is removable. ALWAYS remove it when parked. Thieves aren’t dumb and figured out that the black panels where a stereo should be is actually the stereo. I have freinds who bought JVCs when they first came out, but they don’t have removable faceplates and were all stolen within a year (3 friends=3 stereos). The sony looks just as cool when off, but when on you have to drop down the front panel to access the controls whereas on the JVC they pop out of the front “Active Black Panel” (Sony’s name for it). You can close up the controls on either of these when the stereo is on, but sometimes the JVC will shut itself off. Both of these are awesome sounding stereos, but if you want it to last, buy the sony. Car stereos are my thing, and this is a primo head unit. Sony: CDX-M620 ThereM-^Rs no mistaking Sony distinction when it comes to in-dash CD receivers. This headunit is part of their Xplod series, which continues the tradition with features like an Active Black Panel or a stealth-styled detachable face, 52 watts x 4 of power, and 3 sets of pre-amp outputs. And for those who can never have enough variety in their sound, it has EQ7 with 7 equalizer presets and the ability to control an additional CD/MD changer, or a TV tuner. Sony NVU44 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Text-to-Speech (Gun Metallic)

April 18th, 2010 by pacapao

Sony NVU44 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Text-to-Speech (Gun Metallic) Way better than you know who – Michael Nelson – Rockford IL
This is the best unit ive ever bought and it is so easy to use.
Some very useful features; But a few basic features missing – Plantronics Fan – New Jersey, United States
Good:
1. Navigation voices aren’t robotic.

2. When you search for a Point of Interest – for example Pizza – as you travel, it lists all the Pizza restaurants in the general vicinity and indicates their general direction in relation to your position with an arrow; I find this very useful.

3. As you drive, there will be a yellow triangle adjacent to your position. This triangle constantly points to the general direction of your destination, so you know if you are heading towards the right direction.

4. Good POI – both the data available as well as the search function

5. Reliable navigation and map

6. Quick Satellite fix

7. Announces how much time it took to reach the destination at the end of the trip; too bad it only announces it and doesn’t store or display it.

Bad
1. No option to “Avoid Highways”
2. Three calculation conditions – Standard, Avoid Tolls, Shortest Distance – all mutually exclusive to each other. Which means it cannot navigate the shortest toll free route. It is either shortest distance or Toll Free, not both.
3. Not built to last; either that or you should be extremely delicate when handling this. The USB socket broke of the circuit board in mine.
4. Does not offer even a basic trip statistics feature.

As of this writing, I believe Sony discontinued its GPS products. And that is not surprising. I do not see their usual engineering or design in this GPS
Performs well and is accurate. Clear voice and tried in different States and all worked well. Better than my built-in in another car. Sony: NVU44 The Sony nav-u portable satellite navigation system is more than basic digital maps; it is the system that gets you where you need to go quickly and efficiently with intuitive features that help you along your journey. The latest Sony navigation system brings Photo Viewer to an already packed and helpful unit.

Manufacturer’s Description (September 2, 2008)
Easily portable and offering power on-the-go navigation features, the Sony NV-U44 Portable GPS Navigator makes folding maps a thing of the past. First and foremost a portable navigation system, the NV-U44 offers Sony’s POSITION plus solution to difficult GPS reception conditions for navigation assistance even while under dense foliage or tall buildings. But it also features a photo viewer and Memory Stick Duo slot for uploading photo slideshows. Other features include pre-installed maps for North America, over 5 million points of interest (POIs) with quicker searching, an anti-glare 3.5-inch screen, Gesture commands to help you stay focused on the road, text-to-speech capabilities, and stylish black coloring.

The NV-U44 portable navigation device features a brightly colorful 3.5-inch screen with gesture controls and text-to-speech capabilities to keep your focus on the road.

GPS signals can easily be distorted by tall buildings, very dense foliage, or blocked altogether when underground, and when this happens a GPS device can easily give a false location. Sony’s POSITION plus feature is a unique, hardware-based solution that consists of an acceleration sensor, a pressure sensor and a gyro sensor that together can calculate the vehicle’s current position based on the last known GPS location. The result is a more consistent and accurate position that helps provide interruption-free guidance under the most difficult of GPS reception conditions.

Enjoy powerful, portable navigation out of the box pre-loaded map content covering North America–Canada and all of the United States (including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico)–as well as over 5 million POIs. During address searches, the device can automatically complete partial entries of states, cities and street names. The new Sony nav-u device also offers a revised search algorithm for quicker POI searches and the Quick Link search features that provides a one-touch search for your favorite POI. For example, you can save a favorite coffee shop destination to a Quick Link button and perform that search any number of times without having to retype the search string. Brand icons help users quickly and easily identify their favorite restaurants, hotels, gas stations, stores and other locations while traveling through unfamiliar cities. And this Sony nav-u unit now have 30 percent more brand icons than previous models (more than 150 brands).

With the new Gesture Command feature, you can jump to commands with one touch on the display. For example, you can advance to the next picture in the photo viewer with a swipe of the finger from left to right across the screen. Commonly used commands such as “take me home” may be accessed by gesturing an inverted “V” on the screen versus paging through numerous menu screens. Other gesture commands include zoom in or out and call home.

Stable and secure while driving, the NV-U44 can be easily removed whenever you want to take it with you.

Using the included Super Suction Cup, mounting the NV-U44 to either the dashboard, console, or windshield in virtually any vehicle is quick and easy. Stable and secure while driving, it can be easily removed whenever you want to take it with you.

Other features include:

  • 3.5-inch anti-glare LCD touchscreen with 4:3 standard aspect ratio
  • SiRF star III GPS receiver with POSITION plus
  • TTS (Text to Speech): The device utilizes spoken commands ensuring you are able to follow the directions by street names.
  • 3D Junction Guide: The device’s dual view capability displays dynamic route information, in addition to the conventional map view, to provide an even clearer view of what’s at the next turn or in a highway merge scenario, which junction to take.
  • The new photo viewer feature turns the screen into a picture frame. You can view your digital images by inserting a Memory Stick into the Memory Stick Pro Duo slot.
  • Battery life: Up to 2 hours
  • Battery charging time: 3 hours when on, 1.5 hours in standby mode
  • Dimensions: 3.7 x 2.1 x 4.3 inches
  • Weight: 5.5 ounces

Sony XVM-R75 Motorized Fold-Down Widescreen 7″ LCD Monitor (Silver)

April 18th, 2010 by pacapao

Sony XVM-R75 Motorized Fold-Down Widescreen 7″ LCD Monitor (Silver) looks good, but not dependable. – Mimi N Nguyen – Rockville, MD United States
Great monitor with a cool factor of mototrized fold-down. The problem is the fold-down motor is not durable in regular use. I have owned this monitor for just barely 2 years, and the motor is defective. At every bump on the road, the monitor would automatically close, which drove the kids…and me crazy!! I originally had this professionally installed, and now, the technicians stated that the motor is defective/broken. I am disappointed and really was expecting a much more reliable product from Sony.
Sony: XVM-R75 PRODUCT FEATURES:7′ diagonal LCD screen;Motorized fold-down panel;16×9 widescreen aspect ratio brings out the best in DVDs;Wide and Zoom function accommodate the conventional 4 x 3 aspect ratio programs;3 A/V inputs;1 monitor output;Supplied wireless remote control;Infrared transmitter for Sony cordless headphones;2 mini headphone jacks. Whether keeping the kids entertained on the drive to grandma’s or rehearsing your sales presentation on the way to the next meeting, the Sony XVM-R75 7-inch flip-down LCD provides a welcome distraction (as long as the driver isn’t watching). The monitor provides wireless viewing in your choice of widescreen or conventional 4:3 formats. It connects through the included XA-117 connection box which transmits data directly from your trunk-mounted DVD changer, game system, or other compatible peripheral device.

The screen offers adjustments such as brightness and contrast (dimmer) control to let you view images clearly in most lighting conditions. The unit also features a built-in IR receiver so that it can be operated with the included remote control. An IR transmitter lets you listen using Sony’s wireless headphones (not included).

The XVM-R75 relies on your cars battery to provide power, so when the key is not in the ignition, the panel will automatically fold closed. This is a helpful feature for preventing car break-ins, as it renders the monitor much less visible.

The XVM-R75 comes with everything you’ll need for initial installation. Sony recommends that you have this product professionally installed to prevent accidental interference with or damage to your car’s safety and operational systems. Additionally, you are urged to make sure that the XVM-R75 is mounted in a location that will not obstruct the driver’s view.

What’s in the Box
XVM-R75 LCD, XA-117 connection box, RM-X123 remote control with lithium battery, extension cable (5 m), power cord, DC-DC cord, stereo mini plug-to-plug cable (5 m), mounting plate, screws, tapping screws, cord stopper, crimper, operating instructions, warranty information Sony XVM-R75 Motorized Fold-Down Widescreen 7″ LCD Monitor (Silver)

Sony CDX-GT740UI In-Dash CD Receiver MP3/WMA/AAC Player

April 15th, 2010 by pacapao

Sony CDX-GT740UI In-Dash CD Receiver MP3/WMA/AAC Player I just got this installed in my 2002 Honda Civic and played around with it all day on a trip to Philadelphia.

The Good:
=========================

1. USB input:

It works great! I stuck a 16gb Sandisk Cruzer flash drive with a ton of music on it and it works easily and most importantly, QUICKLY without almost any lag! Navigating the tree of folders and files is very intuitive and easy to do, and is very responsive. Scrolling through the list of folders is fast using the main volume dial, and you ‘click’ the dial like a button and it will open up a folder or playback a file.

I also connected my 3rd gen iPod Nano and my iPhone 3G and they also work perfectly and quickly. With the multiple lines of display, you have onscreen iPod/iPhone access with option to select by album, artist, song, and other categories just like on the device. Easy to quickly scroll through as well. Both charge via the USB cable and the iPhone can do other things (like GPS) while playing back audio files via USB.

2. AUX input:

This works perfectly well. One thing to note, and this may seem obvious, is that the AUX and USB inputs cannot be both accessed simultaneously, i.e. you cannot play back music from a flash drive while outputting GPS voice directions from your iPhone at the same time.

3. Nice design:

Overall, this receiver is very nicely designed. It is asthetically pleasing, with a simple but handsome design. The LCD screen is a dark blue with light blue text, while the backlit buttons and volume dial can be switched between red, blue, and green. It would have been nice to be able to change the color of the LCD but I leave them all blue and it looks nice. Sure there is some cheap chrome plastic used, but it actually looked okay when driving around during the day (and is not noticeable at night). The seek buttons are not shiny plastic but have a somewhat ‘upscale’ matte finish to it which I rather liked.

4. Four-line display:

The screen is really nice, with four lines of text in a font size that is easy to read (but not in sunlight). The first line shows the input on the left side and the clock on the right side. Then there are two different settings for the button three lines of text. The one that I use, is where all three lines are used for music file info. That is, the second line shows the artist name and the album title, and the third line shows the song title. The fourth (bottom) line shows the track # (and another file/folder info) on the left side and elapsed time on the right. The other display setting is to have the bottom two lines display other info, like playback settings, etc., which is pointless IMO. The graphics I found to interfere with the text, but luckily there is an option to turn it off completely.

5. Easy to use:

Everything is intuitively designed (I can’t comment on the odd ‘zip’ function because I have not used it and don’t see myself ever using it) and easy to use, from accessing the settings menu and setting the time, to changing playback settings, etc.

The Bad:
=========================

1. Brightness of the display.

This is really the only thing I don’t love about this receiver, but it is a significant issue. The screen is barely visible in the sunlight. The smaller, skinnier text font is surely partly to blame, but the overall brightness on the daytime setting is just woefully not bright enough, and it makes using this fantastic receiver a bit of a bummer during the day if it is sunny outside. There is a dimmer, night setting but given that the bright setting is not that bright during the night either, I just turned off the auto dimming function since it’s not that bright anyway at the highest setting.

2. Screen dimming function:

Furthermore, the dimming function is pointless because the volume dial and button lights are much brighter than the LCD screen, but only the LCD screen dims with the dimming function.

Overall, though, this is a great receiver and the one that I had been waiting for the past seven years. With it you will no longer need stupid audio or even mp3 data CDs, you just need your USB (or AUX) connected device (HDD, flash drive, media player, cell phone, etc.) and you are set… highly recommend this receiver, you won’t regret it!
